Sat, 17 February 2007 Amazing what employees on the front lines will say, even when interacting with customers.I visited Target on Carrier Parkway and I-20 in Grand Prairie yesterday to return a faulty DVD player. I approached the counter after hearing "Next!" called by the woman working the customer service area. I placed my box on the counter, handed the woman the receipt and was promptly ignored. As she held the receipt, she looked to another woman who worked there and said, among other indiscernible grumblings: -"No one had better write me up for nothin'. I didn't do nothin'" -"I don't need this job" -"They know I'm only here until I can find something better" -"Who wrote me up? I better not find out who did that" -"I never checked out the keys. Someone must have written my name in there" -"She (the supervisor) doesn't know what she's talking about" I stood there for at least a full minute while she carried on about getting written up for something having to do with checking out keys. She then turned her attention to my transaction but continued to grumble under her voice about the supervisor. So as the customer and based on what I heard, I can now assume Target management is incompetent, Target jobs are not valuable, employees have grudges against Target management, Target has a checkout system for keys that does not work effectively (good to know if I'm the criminal type), and one of the supervisors is an idiot. Is this the type of impression I should be given when visiting, of all places, the customer service counter? I choose Target over Wal-Mart for a reason. I've dealt with Target enough to know their customer service is excellent, so this seems to be a staff training issue. I'd like to hear from anyone else via the comments section who has had an experience similar to this Category: general -- posted at: 12:04 PM Comments[9] |
I'm also a Target fan - same reason too! But this isn't a training issue, it's an execution problem on the part of Target management who failed to execute the proper hiring and development of the proper culture that would not tolerate such behavior.

Service is something you just see on the commercials. Loewe's and Home Depot always show people being waited on by courteous employees just waiting around to help someone. This is not the case when I visit these stores. When you do find an employee, he or she can't help you because they either don't know where to find it or don't work in that department. I would like to see more mom and pop hardware stores, where you can walk in and get real service.
I've been loyal to Target for years now- but it's been ENTIRELY selection and convenience-driven rather than from any positive cutomer service I've received. I'm glad some folks are getting good customer service there- I think Target remains a well-executed concept and I must admit I enjoy an afternoon of clothes, cosmetics, cards, candles, snacks and even wine shopping as much if not more than the next gal. It's like "Huckabees"- "tops and mops! the everything store!". I have most frequently gone to the Haskell and 75 location and the NW Highway/Abrams store. Of the literally hundreds of times I've been to the Haskell/75 store, I have only received friendly, efficient customer service 2-3 times, and it was from the SAME person. Because positive retail customer service experiences have become so rare for me, I will actually stand in a line @ the CS Desk just to brag on someone. Sometimes I have been met with a less than enthusiastic manager on the receiving end that seems bothered to even be having the conversation. This is simply incomprehensable to me. What part of being spoonfed positive customer feedback from someone willing to STAND IN LINE is annoying to them? My last experience at the NW Highway/Abrams location was apalling. I was running late to a BBQ and needed some flip flops. While in line, I realized I didn't have any nail scissors in my purse (to cut the elastic band that connects the shoes) and asked the cashier if she could cut it for me. They've done this for me before- I always seem to be buying the requisite shoes for an occasion on the way there. She replied flatly. "No." I looked at her in bewilderment and she said "They dont give us scissors". "Oh, ok", I replied, eyeing the line at the CS Desk knowing I was already pretty late. Seeing that there was hardly anyone in the lanes and no one in line behind me I asked her if there was anyone else she could borrow scissors from or if she could run behind the cs desk and grab a pair. "No. Go to the CS Desk". Running too late to complain, I left. I will still go to that Target and any location for the cute cheap shoes and any number of things I'll be needing, but the possibility of leaving with any kind of warm fuzzy feeling is slim to none.
